The video shows a ball of clay thrown on a potters wheel to make a small decorative bowl. It will be stained when leather hard as it is prepared for the relief carving. After the staining, it will be upside down while being relief carved to allow better access to the surface. It will be carved, allowed to dry, bisque fired, then glazed with a semi-transparent glaze and refired to cone 5-6.
The video starts with the ball of clay centered. The the ball of clay is opened up either for width and height. Working the clay, like many other skills simply requires practice and patience. After becoming more familiar with the clay one will become more familiar with the characteristics of the clay body that is being used.
Good luck learning and it is always nice to see a thrown ball of clay be worked into a finished piece of clay work.
