Experience 1920s Pars in living color and sound. Bobbed hair, cloche hats, flapper dresses and wild Paris nightlife of the Moulin Rouge. Silent film restored to glorious life in 4K 60fps high fidelity with added sound.
My first attempt A Day in 1920s Paris | 1927 Enhanced Film - 4K 60fps was published in January 2021. This is a new version which includes new rare footage by travel historian Burton Holmes. Now colorized and with immersive sound added for a real time travel effect.
Time travel back 100 years to the streets of Paris. We drop in to the famous Café de la Paix on the Place de l'Opéra. This café still plies its trade and is a great place to start your day in Paris with a cup of coffee.
Next we glimpse the silent movie star Pola Negri at the now long forgotten Les Guinguettes de Robinson. A popular guinguette ( music bar and dance venue) located at 32 Rue de Malabry in a small district Le Plessis-Robinson, south of the city.
Only the front façade of the Robinson pavilion is preserved today. Long gone are the bright young dancing couples of the roaring twenties. We head over to Au Caneton restaurant for dinner later
Next up we get a glimpse of 1920s Paris nightlife at the Moulin Rouge. The next morning we take go down tot he seine where we can view Notre-Dame cathedral, its famous wooden steeple still intact. A great view is seen from the Eiffel tower restaurant and finally back to Café de la Paix for a spot of lunch This was the Paris of Hemingway and Joyce, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Picasso and Salvador Dali. This restored time capsule oozes with style. Top fashion designers in 1920s Paris included Madeleine Vionnet, Jean Patou and Coco Chanel.

How silent footage is colorized and brought to Life
I take early fragments of silent 16fps footage and restore them to life by a combination of manual frame by frame colorization as well as the use of deep exemplar-based video colorization techniques. The footage is upscaled and the frames interpolated to a higher frame rate ( in most cases 60 frames per second.) Finally I produce a soundtrack which helps build a new immersive experience for the viewer.
Together, these processes revive old fragments of footage, offering audiences a more
vivid and engaging glimpse of lives long since lived in the distant past.
The colorization process used Deep exemplar-based Video colorization.
