In 2011, shortly after being awarded a prize in the double bass division of the Markneukirchen International Competition, I had the opportunity to perform Bottesini’s Concerto No. 2 at the gala concert. I was officially awarded joint third place, but it was widely regarded as a de facto second prize.

Although I was satisfied with my performance in the final round, the top prize was awarded to a participant known to have a close relationship with one of the jury members. It was a disappointing outcome. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the first prize winner was unable to perform at the gala concert, and I was asked to take their place. It was an unexpected opportunity, but I poured my heart into the performance—it became a moment I will never forget.

The Markneukirchen International Competition, founded in 1966 during the East German era, has grown into one of the most prestigious stages for young musicians worldwide. The double bass category, in particular, has long drawn some of the world’s finest talents, making any prize here more than just an award—it carries deep musical significance.

In the history of this competition, Korean double bassist Minje Sung stands out as the first Korean to win a prize. A rare and celebrated figure in the classical double bass world, his profound musicality and exceptional skill left a strong impression both at home and abroad. His journey has inspired many young musicians, myself included, and I am deeply grateful and proud to have followed in his footsteps on the same stage.

That gala performance meant more to me than just another concert. Though unplanned, it reaffirmed my belief that sincerity in music will always find a way to reach others. It was also the moment I realized I wanted to become an artist who could inspire others through my playing.

Even now, I think of the many young musicians quietly pursuing their own paths. I sincerely hope they, too, will come to understand that sometimes the deepest impact is not in the result, but in the resonance left behind. I send my heartfelt support to all those who continue to challenge themselves with unwavering dedication.

2011년 마크노이키르헨 국제 콩쿠르 콘트라베이스 부문에서 입상한 직후, 갈라 콘서트에서 보테시니 협주곡 2번을 연주했습니다. 당시 저는 공동 3위에 해당했지만, 문서상 2위로 인정받았던 순간이었습니다.

최종 라운드에서 만족스러운 연주를 마쳤음에도 불구하고, 심사위원과 긴밀한 관계가 있었던 1위 수상자에게 상이 돌아간 점은 아쉬움으로 남았습니다. 그러나 수상 직후 열린 갈라 콘서트에서, 1위 수상자가 부득이한 사정으로 무대에 오르지 못하게 되면서, 뜻밖에도 그 자리를 대신하게 되었습니다. 예상치 못한 기회였지만, 마음을 다해 연주한 소중한 순간이었습니다.

마크노이키르헨 국제 콩쿠르는 동독 시절인 1966년 시작되어, 반세기 넘게 세계 각국의 젊은 연주자들이 기량을 겨루는 권위 있는 무대로 자리매김해 왔습니다. 특히 콘트라베이스 부문은 세계적인 실력자들이 모이는 무대로, 이곳에서의 입상은 단순한 수상을 넘어 깊은 음악적 의미를 지닙니다.

그 역사 속에서, 한국인 더블베이스 연주자 성민제는 이 콩쿠르에서 최초로 입상한 연주자로 기록되어 있습니다. 클래식 음악계에서 드물게 주목받는 한국인 더블베이스 연주자인 그는, 깊은 음악성과 탁월한 기량으로 국내외 무대에 강한 인상을 남겼으며, 이후 많은 젊은 연주자들에게 꿈과 용기를 심어주었습니다. 저 역시 그의 발자취를 따라 같은 무대에 설 수 있었음에 큰 감사와 자부심을 느낍니다.

그 갈라 콘서트 무대는 제게 단순한 연주 이상의 의미가 있었습니다. 예상치 못한 기회였지만, 그 순간 덕분에 ‘음악의 진심은 결국 통한다’는 믿음을 더욱 확고히 할 수 있었습니다. 그리고 그 무대를 통해, 언젠가 누군가에게 영감이 되는 연주자가 되고 싶다는 마음도 깊어졌습니다.

지금 이 순간에도 각자의 자리에서 묵묵히 도전하고 있을 많은 젊은 연주자들을 떠올립니다. 때로는 결과보다 더 깊은 울림이 중요한 순간이 있다는 것을, 그들도 언젠가 느낄 수 있기를 진심으로 응원합니다.
