Dammed if we don’t: Could mock beaver dams revive Wisconsin wetlands?

Meet Jim Hoffman, 60, of Jackson County, Wisconsin. Hoffman is an engineer on a personal mission to encourage the construction of artificial beaver dams across his state. In this video, he takes Wisconsin Watch journalists on a tour of his 1,000-acre wildlife safari of a property – where he and a team of other humans are building an artificial beaver dam, technically known as a “beaver dam analog” or BDA.

BDAs have successfully been used in Western states to mitigate the impacts of severe flooding and drought – which are increasingly common as a result of change – and Hoffman would like to see more of them in Wisconsin.
