GSO S2 Ep15 Rollo Davies talks to Gary and Ian

Today Gary and I chat with industry campaigner Rollo Davies. In this episode we ask him about his views on Competence, the SIA, and the role of the Home Office.

Rollo’s career spans 34yrs, starting at the very bottom and working his way up. All of which shows he has walked the walk. Very much like Satia Rai.

We begin by asking him how he started, and what it was like eventually becoming a multi-award winner. (They were delusional, apparently!) Throughout the interview his self-deprecating sense of humour is never far away.

Nor is his willingness to mention the contribution of others to his journey. Micheal Sullivan with TPSO and the Guild of Professional Security Officers, along with others such as Yolanda Hamblyn.

Rollo gives a balanced view of the importance of training, the opportunities it has given him, and the need for it to improve if public safety is to be improved.

He also speaks of the frustrations, he, and many others, have with the SIA. However, as we delve deeper it is clear the real cause of the sectors frustrations lies with the Home Office.

As he, and we have said many times, we cannot understand why the Government seems determined to compromise public safety.

Their refusal to update the Private Security Industry Act 2021 to reflect the myriad of changes in the sector, not least of which is bringing the language up to date, is staggering.

Plus of course of the critical public safety need for the introduction of Business Licensing, extension of investigative powers, and primacy over Ofqual in training compliance.

That the SIA is necessary is agreed. If it didn’t exist, we’d need to invent it. However, most of the industry agree, without the powers to be effective it is fighting an uphill battle.

That said, all of us in the industry who aspire to generate positive change – need to step up and make our voices heard.
