Daughters of Odessa, one of Frederick Hart’s masterworks, is an allegorical sculpture in remembrance of the innocent victims of repression in the twentieth century. Hart, like Rodin in the Burghers Of Calais, has chosen the theme of martyrdom to make a point about the fragility of life and the enduring values of beauty. The maquette is Hart’s first impulse – the birth of the concept. Daughters of Odessa, Maquette contains all the desire and intent of this significant sculpture. It provides an important insight into the creative process of one of America’s greatest sculptors. When you touch the work, it is as if you touched the hand of the sculpture as he molded the work into being.
