Beethoven (1770-1827) was not only the groundbreaking composer that he is forever remembered as, but he was an unsurpassed pianist of his time as well. His collection of 32 piano sonatas, much like Bach’s Well-tempered Clavier, is regarded as one of the most significant contributions to the solo piano repertoire, and it demonstrates Beethoven’s mastery at making the piano speak to the vast depths of the human soul. The Sonata No. 5 was written by a young, rebellious Beethoven still in his twenties. The first movement is energetic, aggressive, and dramatic. It features a jagged, rhythmic ascending motive, sudden dynamic contrasts, broad, sweeping melodies, as well as quiet respite in a lyrical second theme. The second movement is a heart-felt expression of sublime tranquility and introspection. Marked to be played Adagio molto, or “very slowly”, it is filled with utmost tenderness through the use of chromatic melodic tones that evoke wondering and longing. Ornamented with unexpected bursts of rapid figures, the second movement meticulously balances musical tension and repose. Capping off this sonata is the swift-moving third movement. Suspenseful, highly agitated, and featuring huge dynamic changes, this movement overflows with drama and playfulness. In the middle of the movement, one may recognize the brief foreshadowing of Beethoven’s well-known repeated three-note orchestral opening theme from his Fifth Symphony, also in C minor.
