Christmas is a very auspicious time of year in Georgia, when the country’s deep Christian roots and family traditions combine with a legendary reputation for feasting, toasting and partying.
In Georgia, Christmas is celebrated on the 7th January. This is because the Georgian Orthodox Church (like the Orthodox Churches in Russia, Serbia and other countries) use the old 'Julian' calendar for their festivals.
But decorations across Tbilisi city starts from the mid Decemeber. Houses, restuarants and shops across the city get beautifully decorated with flashing lights. The most attractive place with the festive illuminatiuon is Freedom square and the Rustaveli Avenue in the city centre.
Every year, the light display has a different theme. This year theme is 'world landmarks'.
