In this twelfth installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thought, and importance of Albert Camus in his historical context. Camus lived and died in a century marked by some of the worst conflict humanity has ever faced, not only during two world wars but also during the cold war and decolonialization.

Although he rejected the term, Camus was an important member of the broad movement termed "existentialism", and his version of it focused on the stance of the human being in a world that presents itself in absurdity. Do moral and ethical values remain possible, or even viable, in such a world? Camus held that they did.
