There are 8 ways that a restart will occur in soccer and in-depth videos on each are listed in the description below.
Let’s discuss the basics of all 8 restarts.
Restart Number 1 – A Kick Off
Though technically not a restart when it is used to start a game, it is considered a soccer restart after a goal was scored.
For how to do a kickoff in soccer, remember that the ball can go backward and all of your teammates must be behind the ball expect for the player taking the kickoff.
Also, you can score directly from a kickoff.
Restart Number 2 – A Throw-In
A throw in soccer restart occurs when a ball goes out of bounds along a sideline.
Make sure to keep both your feet on the ground.
And bring the ball behind your head and then over your head with both hands.
You can’t score directly from a throw in though.
Restart Number 3 – A Goal Kick
It is awarded to the defending team if the offensive team last touches the ball after it goes over the defending team’s end line.
A goalkeeper takes a goal kick by placing the ball on the line of 6-yard box or within it.
Any player on the team taking the goal kick is allowed to take it.
And a player can score from a goal kick.
Restart Number 4 – A Corner Kick
It is awarded because the defending team last touched the ball before it went over the end line.
The attacking team restarts the game from the corner nearest where the ball went out of bounds.
No one can be offside from the initial kick of a corner kick.
(Insert image of danger zone) Also, aim for the danger zone when taking a corner kick.
And try not to score from them, even though you are allowed.
Restart Number 5 – An Indirect Free Kick
Indirect kicks in soccer are awarded when a non-penalty foul occurs.
Think of indirect kick fouls in soccer are ones that do not involve a handball or contact with the other team.
A goal scored without another players’ touch will not count from an indirect free kick.
Restart in Soccer Number 6 – A Direct Free Kick
It is awarded when a foul directly against a player of the other team or handball occurs.
Players on the other team need to start 10 yards away when the ball is kicked.
A goal can be scored from a direct free kick.
Restart Number 7 – A Penalty Kick
This is a type of direct free kick that occurs in defending teams penalty box, also known as the 18-yard box.
This allows the team taking the penalty kick to have a direct shot from the penalty spot at the goalkeeper without any other defenders in the penalty box.
Restart Number 8 – A Dropped Ball
This is the soccer restart used after an injury.
The ball is dropped to a player from the team that last had the ball before play was whistled dead.
Fun fact: If there is a foul that occurs when the ball is not in play, the type of foul does not change how play is restarted.
