Gabriel’s Message by Edgar Pettman is a beloved arrangement of a traditional Basque carol that recounts the Annunciation—the moment the angel Gabriel appears to Mary. In Gabriel’s Message, Pettman combines the carol’s striking modal melody with gentle, flowing harmonies that preserve the piece’s folk origins while giving it a refined choral elegance. Pettman, an English organist, editor, and arranger active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was known for his contribution to bringing European folk carols into the English choral tradition, and this arrangement remains his most famous.
The original text is in Basque, with a later English paraphrase often used in performance. The anonymous poet crafts a vivid, reverent retelling of Gabriel’s proclamation, emphasizing Mary’s humility and divine grace. The refrain, referencing “Most highly favoured lady,” captures the awe and wonder at the heart of the story.
