If you want to have a fun activity while traveling through the southwestern corner of Montana, you can go to the Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine and find sapphires that you can take home.
Everyone who was there came away with multiple small sapphires. You buy a bucket full of gravel to go through to find them. You may find them in all kinds of colors. Most people think sapphires are only blue, but they're not. We came away with sapphires that were green, yellow, orange, pink, as well as blue.
Gem Mountain has a facility where they can heat-treat your sapphires so that they turn a darker color and are much more beautiful. They can also get them cut for you and put them in jewelry if you would like.
This is a fun activity that is exciting when you find the sapphires, and everyone we saw came away with twenty or more. They are mostly small, but some people found fairly large ones.
