As Allied victories mounted in late 1944 and early 1945, confidence in defeating Nazi Germany grew. Planning for V-E Day began, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt envisioning a day of Thanksgiving and prayer. Though President Roosevelt died in April 1945, he was confident in the Allies' success. Victory came on May 8, 1945, amid growing anticipation and tension. President Harry S. Truman, finding inspiration through Roosevelt, declared a national day of prayer and reflection upon Germany’s surrender. While celebrations broke out across the U.S., they were tempered by a continued focus on defeating Japan.
Watch and hear William Harris, the Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, who will lead this discussion on President Roosevelt and V-E Day!
