This is the metamorphic rock garnet mica schist. It’s a medium-grained rock with well-developed foliation of mica minerals. Prominent garnet crystals occur throughout the rock. Shale is usually the protolith of garnet schist. The following clips display this rock’s thin section under a microscope, first in plane-polarized light, and then in cross-polarized light.
