I’m nearer the end than the start
The lines are written for my part - in the play
As I wait for the curtain to fall
On the lived and the waste of it all - blown away

Between now and where it began
The journey to be who I am – come and gone
Can’t turn back hands on the clock
Time waits for no one to stop – just goes on

As all the pages are turned, lessons learned
Candles burned at both ends
It’s goodbye lovers and friends, good bye lovers and friends

Who I am and who I have been
Is not what you think you have seen – that’s a joke
It’s taken me down to the wire
I can’t see the flames in the fire – for the smoke

I’ve emptied my curious mind
Torn up the contract I signed – in my head
On the corner of hope and despair
Travellers with less than all the fare – have to beg

As all the pages are turned, lessons learned

On my back with one hand tied
Fallen when I’ve started to slide – and it hurts
And when I look up at the sky
See who I am eye to eye – that’s a curse

I am who I am and I’m not
The days when I’ve wanted to swap – come and go
When the end is the start in disguise
Life the imaginary prize – don’t you know
