Thiruvannamalai Annamalaiyar Temple is a very sacred Shiva temple located in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the Panchabhootha temples — a temple representing the principle of Agni (fire).

Annamalaiyar: The Lord resides here under the name Arunachaleswarar or Annamalaiyar. He is also mentioned in many Saiva literatures such as Thevaram, Thiruvasakam. Ambal: His counterpart is known as Unnamulaiyammai or Abithakusampigai.

The Lingodbhava Legend

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma argued about who was supreme. Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite column of fire and challenged them to find either end.

Vishnu went downwards as a boar (Varaha), and Brahma went upwards as a swan (Hamsa). Both failed to find the beginning or end. Brahma and Vishnu realized that Lord Shiva was supreme.

To commemorate this history, a large flame is lit on the Annamalai hill during Karthigai Deepam in Tiruvannamalai. This symbolizes Shiva as the eternal light. The karthigai festival is celebrated in the Tamil month of Karthigai (November–December), on the Karthigai star day, which is considered auspicious. It coincides with full moon day (Pournami), adding to the spiritual energy.

Another story is also told about this temple. According to the mythological story called Arunachala Mahatmiyam, when Goddess Parvati was playing with Lord Shiva, Shiva sent her back to the world. It is said that Lord Shiva blessed Parvati in the form of Agni Jyothi, who was then performing penance with devotion.

The temple is spread over an area of ​​about 25 acres and has 12 towers. Of these, the Rajagopuram (east tower) is 217 feet high — one of the tallest temple towers in the world.

Girivalam: There is a 14 km long Girivalam path around the Thiruvannamalai hill. Lakhs of devotees walk it on days like Shivaratri and Pournami.

Karthigai Deepam is the most important festival held here. Lord Shiva, who is the incarnation of Annamalaiyar, is worshipped in a great lamp placed on the hill. This symbolizes the Agni tattvam.

லிங்கோத்பவ புராணத்தின்படி, விஷ்ணுவும் பிரம்மாவும் தங்களில் யார் உயர்ந்தவர் என்பது பற்றி வாதிட்டனர். சிவபெருமான் எல்லையற்ற நெருப்புத் தூணாகத் தோன்றி, இரு முனைகளையும் கண்டுபிடிக்க சவால் விடுத்தார்.

விஷ்ணு ஒரு பன்றியாக (வராஹர்) கீழ்நோக்கிச் சென்றார், பிரம்மா ஒரு அன்னமாக (ஹம்சம்) மேல்நோக்கிச் சென்றார். இருவருமே தொடக்கத்தையோ முடிவையோ கண்டுபிடிக்கத் தவறிவிட்டனர்.

பிரமாவும் விஷ்ணுவும் சிவபெருமானே உயர்ந்தவர் என்பதை உணர்ந்தனர்.

இந்த வரலாற்றை நினைவுகூர்ந்தே திருவண்ணாமலையில் கார்த்திகை தீபத்தின் போது அண்ணாமலை மலையின் மேல் மகாதீபம் ஏற்றப்படுகிறது.

அருணாசல மஹாத்மியம் என்ற புராணக் கதையின்படி, பார்வதி தேவி சிவபெருமானுடன் விளையாடியபோது, சிவன் அவளை உலகிற்குத் திருப்ப அனுப்பினார். அப்போது பக்தியுடன் தவம் இருந்த பார்வதிக்கு சிவன் அக்னி ஜோதி வடிவில் அருள்பாலித்ததாக கூறப்படுகிறது.

இக்கோவில் சுமார் 25 ஏக்கரில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்த கோயிலில் 12 கோபுரங்கள் உள்ளன. இதில், பிரதான ராஜகோபுரம் 217 அடி உயரமுடையது — இது உலகின் உயரமான கோயில்கோபுரங்களில் ஒன்றாகும். திருவண்ணாமலை மலைச் சுற்றி 14 கி.மீ. நீளமுள்ள கிரிவலப் பாதை உள்ளது. சிவராத்திரி, பவுர்ணமி போன்ற தினங்களில் லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் கிரிவலம் வருகிறார்கள்.

கார்த்திகை தீபம் என்பது இங்கு நடைபெறும் மிக முக்கியமான விழா. அண்ணாமலையாராக விளங்கும் சிவபெருமான், மலைமேல் வைக்கப்படும் மகா தீபத்தில் பூஜிக்கப்படுகிறார். இது அக்னி tattvam-ஐ எடுத்துக்காட்டுகிறது.
