Francois Gossec played a pivotal role in the development of Bologne's music, with Bologne having learned to compose under Gossec's instruction. It was in Gossec's Concert des Amateurs that Bologne debuted as a violinist as well a composer.
It is believed that Bologne's technique was the result of Antonio Lolli and Jean-Marie Leclair's (elder) tutelage. His passionate playing style, use of the highest positions on the fingerboard and double-stop execution, contributed to his virtuosity.
Although there isn't much evidence to suggest that Bologne and Haydn were particularly close, Bologne did commission the Paris Symphonies from Haydn and conducted their debut. In addition, Bologne's first set of string quartets were inspired by Haydn's.
