N.IRELAND - Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s active and healthy communities committee have approved a proposal to join the ‘City of Sanctuary’ network.
This would see the local authority join a network of communities and organisations to become places of safety and inclusion for refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants.
Concerns have been raised that the council’s welcome status for refugees could create a “serious situation” if it encourages “illegal immigrants” into the district.
Discussing this and the planned protest to oppose it with Melissa Ciummei.
