इतिहासकार डॉ. रजीन डिसिल्वा यांच्या मते मदर ऑफ गॉड चर्चच्या उभारणीची नेमकी तारीख जाणून घेणे फार कठीण आहे. त्यांच्या मते 1638 मध्ये पोर्तुगीज भाषेत एक पुस्तक लिहिणारे फादर पाओलो डी त्रिन्दाडे यांनी वसई किल्ल्याबाहेरील पहिले चर्च म्हणून पल्ले चर्चचा उल्लेख केला आहे. येथे अद्भुत अशी सर्वात मोठी जत्रा भरते. ह्या एक दिवसीय जत्रेचा अनुभव नक्की घ्या.

The church of Mae de Deus* (Mother of God) at Palle in Bassein.

The Franciscan priest Fr. Achilles Meersman mentions that the church at Palle in Bassein was built in 1595 as stated in Franciscans in Bombay

It is actually difficult to categorically state the exact date when the Church was erected. Since it was mentioned in the Franciscan Chapter-lists of 1585, hence it can be presumed that it was built sometime between 1577 to 1585

According to Paulo de Trindade, there was a very beautiful statute of Our Lady in the Church reiterated by the Franciscan Chronicler that states that the Church was dedicated to the Mother of God and possessed “an image of our Lady of great beauty” “pierced by a sword” for which the people of Bassein had a great devotion.

On 15 May 1618, at 2 AM, a powerful earthquake occurred in Bassein and was immediately followed by a super cyclone which roared over Bassein for two days. On the morning of May 16,1618 the image of Our Lady in the church at Palle was seen with a veil which was wrapped around her face. The priest in residence here in 1635 by name Fr. Antonio, had written in a letter about this to his superiors in Goa.

The Church at palie was destroyed in 1739 and was rebuilt a century later (between 1840-44) on a new site about a hundred feet west of the original site. In 1854 the Catholic population of Palle was 1215 and in 1859 it was 1397.

Even to this day the people of Bassein refer to this Church by its Portuguese name *“Mae de Deus”*, and each year the parish feast is celebrated on December 18, which is popularly known as "Palle Fiesta"
