Gandhamardan Hills, also known as Gandhamardan Parbat (Odia: ଗନ୍ଧମାର୍ଦନ ପର୍ବତ), is a hill range located in Odisha, India, specifically between the districts of Balangir and Bargarh. It's famous for its rich biodiversity, particularly its medicinal plants, and is considered an "ayurvedic paradise". The hills are also known for their religious significance, with temples like Nrusinghanath and Harishankar situated on either side.


Location: Spans the border between Balangir and Bargarh districts.
Medicinal Plants: Well-known for its abundant and diverse medicinal plants.
Religious Significance: Home to the Nrusinghanath Temple (north) and Harishankar Temple (south), both of which are important pilgrimage sites.
Mythological Connection: Legend says Lord Hanuman carried this hill from the Himalayas to save Lakshman's life.
Bauxite Deposits: The hills also contain significant bauxite deposits.



Biodiversity:
Gandhamardan is recognized for its rich biodiversity, with the Botanical Survey of India reporting the presence of numerous plant species with medicinal value. Locals believe there are even more species than reported by the BSI.
Temples:
The Nrusinghanath Temple on the northern slope and the Harishankar Temple on the southern slope are major religious attractions. The plateau between them is believed to house remnants of the ancient Parimalgiri University, which is said to have been Buddhist.
Mythological Importance:
The hill is closely associated with the Hindu epic, Ramayana, where Hanuman is said to have carried it from the Himalayas.
Bauxite Mining:
The presence of bauxite has led to mining activities in the area, which has raised environmental concerns.
