This is a the only recording of Cherkassky playing the Grieg piano concerto 'live.' Like his friend Horowitz, Cherkassky was a master of tonal shading, light and shade and this performance is unique for it's sheer style, spontaneity and individuality. His gorgeous cantabile touch is especially notable in the lovely slow movement.
This performance was broadcast from the MUSIKVEREIN WEIN Great Hall February 1980. The Vienna Philharmonic is conducted by CARL MELLES.
