The British Rail Class 317 is an electric multiple-unit (EMU) passenger train.
The Class 317 was the first class of British Rail EMU to be built on the all-steel Mark 3 bodyshell, making a departure from the aluminium-based PEP shell.
A total of 72 4-car trainsets were built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) in two batches as follows:
×The first batch was built between 1981 and 1982 for use on the then-newly electrified St Pancras to Bradford route, being comprised of 48 units that were classified as Class 317/1. In this batch, three of the four cars per unit were built at BREL's Holgate Road carriage works and the remaining car at Derby Litchurch Lane Works.
×The second batch of 24 units was built between 1985 and 1987, being given the TOPS classification Class 317/2. This batch's front end design differed slightly from the previous patch, being more rounded akin to the likes of second- and third-phase Class 455 units. The batch was built for use on outer-suburban routes on the Great Northern route from London King's Cross to Stevenage, Cambridge, and Peterborough.
The first unit entered service on 28 March 1983, although they were originally intended to enter service in October 1982 to replace the Class 127 diesel multiple-units that were ageing and unreliable.
With the privatisation of British Rail in the 1990s, several Class 317s were refurbished and reclassified as a series of different subclasses.
On Saturday 16th July, Greater Anglia’s Class 317 electric commuter trains had their last scheduled trips on the network.
The Class 317 trains have run on the West Anglia route for over 30 years. The route which runs between Cambridge, Hertford East, and London Liverpool Street is being replaced with state-of-the-art longer trains.
Enjoy :D
