It takes a village to raise a baby — and when the babies are corals, that village includes dedicated scientists as well. With fewer adult corals surviving and reproducing after the major bleaching events of 2023 and 2024, every new coral is a ray of hope for the reef. But how can scientists help corals grow?
Join us at the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere: the Mesoamerican Reef. On Roatán Island, Honduras, researchers from the California Academy of Sciences have partnered with the Roatán Marine Park to develop treatments that help baby corals survive and reach adulthood.
But first, they need the babies. Scientists head out to sea to track coral spawning — yet for three nights in a row, no corals spawn, despite conditions being right. The window is closing, and the experiments hang in the balance.
Will the corals spawn? Will the scientists succeed?
Watch our second episode to find out.
And make your holiday giving count — for corals. This season, support the scientists and communities working to protect and restore reef ecosystems worldwide.
Surprise your loved ones with the gift of reef protection, and help save corals and the people who depend on them.
