Rick Rescorla was a retired Army colonel who worked as the head of security for Morgan Stanley in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. When the first plane hit the North Tower, Rescorla quickly sprang into action, conducting numerous drills that he had prepared beforehand, and began evacuating almost all of the employees from the building. Rescorla's calm and authoritative presence helped keep people focused and calm during this crisis. Despite knowing the danger he faced, he repeatedly went back into the building to search for stragglers and make sure everyone was accounted for. He was last seen going back up the stairs of the South Tower, which collapsed a few minutes later.
Rescorla's bravery and dedication to the safety of others have been widely recognized, and he is remembered as a hero of 9/11. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal, and a statue of him was erected at the West Point Military Academy.
