Nobel Prize winner and parasitologist William Campbell MS’54, PhD’57 is honored by colleagues and former students as he receives a 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award. Campbell’s development of the medicine ivermectin to treat river blindness has had a worldwide impact, helping to eradicate the disease in many of the affected countries in South American and Africa. Campbell was originally interested in academic research, but his UW adviser encouraged him to apply to the pharmaceutical company Merck, where he “discovered the tremendous joy and excitement of doing something that might actually be useful.”
The Distinguished Alumni Award is the Wisconsin Alumni Association’s most long-standing award. It celebrates prestigious graduates of UW–Madison for their professional achievements, contributions to society, and support of the university over the course of their career or lifetime.
