9. Nicephore Niepce
This one is for all of you photographers out there. If this man hadn’t done what he did, you very well might not be doing what you are doing today. Joseph Nicephore Niepce lived back in the 17 and 1800’s, and is credited as being not only a pioneer in the field of photography but as the inventor of photography itself! In 1825, he made a print from a photoengraved printing plate, which is considered the oldest surviving product of a photographic process. Then, in either 1826 or 27, he built an extremely primitive camera and ended up with the oldest surviving photo taken of a real-world scene. He began his venture into photography after developing an interest in a new art-form: lithography. He ended up deciding that he didn’t have enough artistic ability, or the skill, for the art, and pushed into finding a way to capture images. He produced a few negative in the early 1800’s, but it wasn’t until the mid-1820’s that he managed to take a real photograph, and that print still survives today. It is the oldest-known photograph in existence. Innovative? Yes. World-changing? Yes. Thank you Niepce.
8. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
This man is known to all or should be if he’s not. Most will probably know him by Mozart, as that’s what he’s mostly referred to by, and he was an extraordinarily influential and prolific composer back in the 1700’s. He was phenomenal on the violin and keyboard by the age of five and began performing for European royalty at the young age. He was a musician in the Salzburg court by age 17, but grew restless and decided to travel to find somewhere better to perform. He visited Vienna, where he chose to stay, and it is there that he gained plenty of fame. He sadly passed at age 35 but managed to produce many operas, symphonies, and concertos, amassing more than 600 works in his short time on Earth. He is still incredibly influential amongst classical composers and has even influenced many artists in every genre today. He met Ludwig van Beethoven, who took a lot from Mozart and was greatly influenced by him as well. It’s safe to say that Mozart was a great innovator and has played a vital role in the way music is made, listened to, and performed today.
7. Nikola Tesla
This man was highly influential and is known for many inventions and innovations in his time. He was an inventor, physicist, electrical and mechanical engineer, and a futurist who greatly influenced the design of the current alternating current electricity supply system, which revolutionized the power system format in both Europe and the United States. He conducted many experiments with electricity, X-ray imaging, generators, and even came up with a wireless-controlled boat, which, in its time, was phenomenal and unseen before. He explored wireless communication and also believed that, with his devices, such a thing could be accomplished. He kind of thought of cell phones before cell phones, but ran out of funding before he could get the ideas off the ground. Oh, and he also came up with the Tesla coil and worked with Edward Dean Adams on figuring out the best way to transmit power from Niagara Falls. He has been named as a significant influence by many in all walks of life and lives on through basically all forms of art and science today.
