Saga of conserving #vultures in #wildlifeindia began when scientific studies by BNHS revealed that a decline in dead cattle carrion had wiped out nearly 99% of wild vultures.
We partnered with the Forest Department of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Natures_Voice and BirdLife, we undertook successful conservation breeding of 700 white rumpled and slender and long-billed vultures.
The real challenge was to rewild them where they can play an ecosystem role in wild tiger forests where prey of tigers leopards and wild dogs can be recycled by Vultures completing carbon and nitrogen cycle.
Hence 20 vultures are undergoing soft release in Tadoba and Pench National Park in partnership with Tadoba National Park, Guru Prasad, G Nandkishor Kale, Kushagra Pathak and Prabhu Nath Shukla.
This saga has now been narrated at IUCN #worldspeciescongress2024
