"How many times have decisions about Africa's debt been made in rooms where Africans were not present? How many times have trade rules that disadvantage our industries been written without our input? How many times have we been told what is good for us by those who have never walked in our shoes? An African G20 means that Africa's priorities shape the agenda!"
At the Southern African Liaison Office Hybrid Public Dialogue, themed “Will G20 South Africa be a G20 on the African continent or an African G20?” on 7 October 2025, Mr. William Carew, Head of the African Union ECOSOCC Secretariat, drew an important distinction.
It is the difference between Africa as a spectator and Africa as an architect, between repeating history and making it.
He reminded participants that #Africa’s priorities on #debt, #trade, and #ClimateFinance must define the #G20 agenda, not merely appear in it.
