Oklahoma City’s economic landscape is marked by a paradox of affordability and growing hardship. On one hand, it’s ranked as one of the most affordable large U.S. cities in terms of housing costs relative to local incomes. On the other, poverty remains widespread: eviction filings have surged in recent years, homelessness has increased significantly, and stagnant wages limit upward mobility. The city’s reliance on sales tax revenues is strained by online competition and slowing growth, which squeezes public services and limits investment in struggling neighborhoods.
Crime in Oklahoma City is also a critical concern and tends to follow economic fault lines. The overall crime rate is higher than most peer and neighboring cities. As of 2025, the violent crime rate is above the national average, and property crime rates—such as burglary and theft—are also notably high. While violent crime has dipped over the past few years thanks to reform efforts, crime remains concentrated in specific districts. Downtown and older southside neighborhoods tend to see the highest rates of criminal activity.
Living in Oklahoma City comes with both positive aspects and ongoing challenges. Newly revitalized areas like Bricktown and downtown boast entertainment, parks, and redevelopment projects, attracting investment and newcomers. Yet adjacent to these are pockets of concentrated poverty, high incarceration, and housing instability, especially in the southern and southeastern parts of the city. Social service and justice-reform advocates point out that entrenched economic inequality fuels cycles of crime and incarceration. Anyone relocating should carefully research neighborhoods, understand local school and social support networks, and weigh the city’s affordability against potential safety and employment challenges.
