Scenes from San Francisco's Cable Car system of three surviving lines of a once larger system in the inner northern area of the city.
The system is operated by MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway) which also operates the 'F historic tramway (streetcar), MUNI Metro, and Trolleybuses.
Cable cars began to lose favour to conventional electric tramways following the 1906 earthquake, which in turn lost favour to Trolleybuses and Diesel Buses, in the 1950s & 60s as in almost all of the Anglosphere.
Between 1982 & 1984 the entire system was closed for major engineering works which involved complete replacement of cabling and track work.
The cable cars operate on 1067 mm (3' 6") gauge. The Powell street lines use single ended cars with turntables, while the California Street line uses double ended cars.
