The BEST Way To Sit

I remember watching a nature documentary on lost tribes; places far removed from the touch of the modern world.
It was a window into such a different way of life.
Aside from the obvious differences of how these people lived their lives, what always stood out to me was how they moved, how they sat, what they did their body on a daily basis.
Though I don’t know the age of some of these villagers, I knew they were elders — maybe in their 40’s or early 50’s. To see them playing with kids, running, jumping, sitting on the ground, squatting, and dancing for hours around a fire in a ceremonial way always fascinated me.
Without the ‘expert’ advice from strength or mobility coaches, ergonomic pros, or a closet full of gadgets promising to fix movement problems, these people moved. They moved well, and they moved often.
Even laboriously doing tedious tasks on the ground, they were constantly shifting in and out of positions with their body most westerners would deem ‘impossible’.
A study conducted by Gordon Hewes documented more than a 100 different positions humans from 480 cultures adopt when they sit without a chair. A chair, makes sitting so comfortable, we don’t need to move much — and there we can stay for hours upon hours; no wonder why we feel so stiff and tight at the end of the day.
I propose there is no ‘one way to sit’ rather the best way to sit is to constantly change positions. This keeps your body on the move, even at rest.
Removing the chair and bringing yourself down to the ground, when possible, opens up your joints and soft tissue to new deeper ranges of motion. At first, it’ll be uncomfortable as hell because you’re asking your body to mobilize in ways it hasn’t had to move in years. And then, as the body always does, it adapts and adjusts. You’ll begin to notice the ground becomes more comfortable as your joints open up. In fact, you’ll crave ‘floor time’ once your body recognizes the value in restoring and maintaining soft tissue mobility.
It’s not a complete fix for movement problems, but it’s a hell of a start and beats continuing to not move in a chair all day long.
Hope this helps.
