The Future of Electronic Meetings 2022 | Strata AGMs and SGMs | BC Strata Corporations

UPDATE: Effective March 25, 2023 all strata corporations can hold annual and special general meetings (AGMs/SGMs) by telephone or other electronic means (no bylaw required). Voting cards are not required for eligible voters attending an AGM/SGM by electronic means. And an eligible voter attending an AGM/SGM by electronic means is not entitled or required to vote by secret ballot. (This allows greater flexibility to use online voting platforms, polling features etc. The strata corporation may conduct a secret ballot physically and/or electronically, but is not required for those attending electronically.)

This webinar explores what BC strata corporations have learned about holding electronic general meetings since the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic was called March 2020. We also discuss new technology that has the potential to resolve some of the challenges with meeting, registration, proxy voting, fractional votes, voting by secret ballot, and council elections. Lastly we look at the current Standard Bylaws and identify areas that our strata corporations could amend wording to reflect that attendance may be both in-person and electronic; that multiple voting methods might need to be used at the same time to allow each eligible voter to cast their vote; the BC Supreme Court's interpretation of how to conduct a secret ballot; and what method or methods our stratas want to use to allow voters to cast their vote anonymously.
