War & Pieces
The contemporary Dutch artist Bouke de Vries presents a personal interpretation of an 18th-century European "surtout de table" (centerpiece) by using an assemblage of broken and unbroken porcelain shards (pieces). The artist takes advantage of the homophony between peace and piece, in a reference to the famous Tolstoy's novel War & Peace. The creation is a commentary on mass production, waste, and the glorification of violence in contemporary culture.
