The advice is:
The Army does not need lieutenants. It needs captains.
Learn everything about your platoon, then learn about the missions of your company and battalion.
Be physically fit. Find something you are good at and be the guy or gal who excels at that particular discipline (Marathon/CrossFit/Martial Arts/Powerlifting).
Be yourself. The soldiers know when you are pretending.
Don't use rank to get out of work.
Suck up knowledge from your platoon sergeants, but know when they are being shady.
Take care of yourself first.
Ask questions, especially of privates who want to tell you what they know.
Buy and learn how to use an M18 or M17 pistol.
Inspect and perform layouts of everything you sign for
Don't get into relationships with anyone on post - ideally within 25 miles of post.
Personal relationships matter more than professional relationships.
Be good and early with paperwork.
Don't drink or gamble with Joe. Don't take from Joe.
Don't display political opinions to your subordinates.
