Today, we are celebrating the Solemnity of The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in Latin, ‘Corpus Christi.’ This Solemnity was instituted by Pope Urban IV in 1264 to honour the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist; following a Eucharistic miracle and the influence of Saint Juliana of Liege. In Catholic tradition, the Body and Blood of Jesus refers to the Eucharist, a central sacrament where bread and wine become the actual Body and Blood of Christ. This transformation, known as transubstantiation, occurs during the Mass at the moment of consecration, when the priest repeats Jesus’ words from the Last Supper: “This is my body... this is my blood.” This tradition is rooted in Jesus’ command at the Last Supper to “Do this in memory of me” (cf. Luke 22:19), and it is viewed not just as symbolic, but as a real and ongoing participation in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
