A February ascent of Mulhacén, the highest mountain in mainland Spain, located in the Sierra Nevada range of Andalucía.
While this peak is known for intense wind and sub-zero windchill in winter, we were lucky with surprisingly calm conditions and sunshine. Our route was:
🟢 Start: Hoya del Portillo
⬆️ Ascent: West ridge
⬇️ Descent: South ridge
🚫 Note: Refugio Poqueira was closed for refurbishment at the time of our trip
This was my first visit to the Sierra Nevada and I don’t speak Spanish — so while I welcome pronunciation tips, be kind about my slip-ups! 😅
Expect beautiful views, snow-covered slopes, and a surprisingly peaceful day on Spain’s rooftop.
