00- INTRO* Today, as we further explore New Jersey, let's make our way to the historic Cape May Lighthouse and find out some history and facts about it. This lighthouse played an big role so stay tuned to find out more only on the Epic Travel Adventures.
20- Cape May Lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park at the tip of Cape May which is at the southern tip of New Jersey. Out of total 18 lighthouses in the state, the Cape May Lighthouse is the tallest one standing at 157.5 feet.
41- Cape May Lighthouse was built & lit in 1859. It was automated in 1946. It is still active to this day and you can explore it for a small fee. Stay tuned as we go to the top of the lighthouse later in the video.
13- This 26-foot surf rescue boat is a Monomoy Class boat used by the US Coast Guard in order to save lives at sea through the 1800’s to mid 1900’s. I imagine it was very rocky at times to be in this little boat. It was also a very dangerous job by today’s standards.
37- If you are wondering what a lighthouse is, it is a structure that emits a very bright light as a means of a navigational aid for maritime pilots. By emitting light, lighthouses warn ships of dangerous areas by identifying dangerous rocks, reefs, and coastlines. Basically a lighthouse is a traffic sign for boats. Today, the number of operational lighthouses has declined as cheaper and more precise electronic navigational devices are being used. Although there are still around 18,600 active lighthouses.
07- Below the lighthouse is the Oil House Museum Shop and the Visitor's Orientation Center where you can purchase books and souvenirs. The Oil House itself was built in 1893 in order to store kerosene to power the light in the lighthouse. This was mainly done for the fire safety reasons as that kerosene was very volatile. Notice the pagoda shaped roof designed to draw out fumes. In 1990 this oil house was converted to the Museum Shop you see today.
06- Let’s head inside the lighthouse and find out some history. Did you know that the US has more lighthouses than any other country?
45- Since its opening in 1988, over 2.5 million people climbed this lighthouse. To get to the top you need to climb 199 steps within the tower's cast iron spiral staircase. From the ground however, there are 217 total steps.
26- At Cape May Point, this lighthouse is the third to be built in the 1800's. The first two have eroded and are now underwater.
47- At the very top the view is breathtaking. From here you can see Cape May City and Wildwood to the NORTH, Cape May Point to the SOUTH and Cape Henlopen, Delaware to the WEST.
38- Did you know that Cape May Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places since it was put on the list in 1973? Today the lighthouse is owned by the state after the Coast Guard transferred its membership in 1992.
30- The range of the light emitted by the current rotating VRB-25 aerobeacon lens is about 22 nautical miles which replaced the original Fresnel lens.
56- The lighthouse has 2 separate walls - the outside wall & the inside wall both able to withstand the winds several times above the hurricane force.
05- Some distance away from the lighthouse is the Cape May Hawk Watch where you can see beautiful scenery and wildlife.
22- PREVIEW* Next, lets further explore Cape May and see what the former military Battery 223 Bunker is all about. Located right on the beach this is a once in a life time opportunity. So don't miss it, ONLY on the Epic Travel Adventures.
