🎃 Trick or treat? I come to bury Ozzy… not to impersonate him vocally. This song means a lot to me, both as pacifist and as Sabbath fan. I learned to play bass (at ten) listening to Butler, and admiring his poetry. Still, my intention is not to produce a “sound-alike” recording, as I often do. This is merely a Samhain/Halloween homage to the legendary Ozzy Osbourne (1948-2025), an influential singer I’ve admired for 56 years.

For a geezer like me, the muscular soloing-style of Iommi and Butler is tricky to remember (riff for riff) and replicate on-camera in the kind of “sync-to-audio” old-school videos which I do. Here, I try merely to create an original voice, performing bare bones of the song (sans solos), to honor the “vibe” of the late Oz-man and present a moderate band “likeness.” If you’re a hardcore Sabbath fan who requires note-for-note solos and bass riffs, or you need an Oz-vocal impression, please take a hard pass on my reprise. This is my own “take” on this classic… and yeah, I think, indy giant as he was, Oz would enjoy such ‘deviance’ from the expected path.

No doubt, Ozzy was an eccentric man… but whatever you may think of this loose cannon, we celebrate that he and his gonzo bandmates were among the founders of Metal. Serious respect.

“To begin with, the first track on Black Sabbath’s second album, Paranoid, sounds like a segue from its occult-themed predecessor. But then a second world war air raid siren warns of the human violence to come. A tight two-chord power riff shatters the squall and intermittently punctures a tight hi-hat cymbal rhythm while singer Ozzy Osbourne’s rising wail introduces the “Generals gathered in their masses, just like witches at black masses” — an identical rhyme that somehow works — as guitar trills pepper his words.
In little more than a minute, Black Sabbath had pushed a nascent heavy metal genre into a new era. “War Pigs” was their magnum opus. The song, released in 1970, struck a chord with a growing legion of heavy rock fans but also among anti-war activists….
… In “War Pigs”, the generals — dubbed “the real Satanists” by the bassist [lyricist Butler]— and warmongering politicians who use the poor as chess pieces became the focal point of the story. Satan was kept on as the architect of the carnage (he escapes) as the war pigs face judgment day.”

RE-VO’s message for today: If you enjoy Halloween memes, I can think of nothing scarier than a world (over 70%) comprised of right-wing dictatorships. Are you, like me, angered that 😈 T&*$% and Fox News junior host Pete Hegseth renamed the U.S. Department of Defense… “The Department of War”? Then, buff Pete proceeded to give the generals a dressing-down for not being physically-fit or clean-shaven.

How do you feel about America participating in at least five international “conflicts” and conducting thousands of covert drone strikes internationally? Are you angry they’re illegally bombing ships in the Caribbean… trying to pick a fight with [an albeit-terrible-$&#@] Venezuelan dick-tator Maduro, without approval from Congress and without disclosing names of those killed in these unilateral bombings? And there are new plans to revive nuclear testing. Write about it, my friends, an enraged letter to your local representatives.
