Japan This! Podcast ep01 Sankin Kōtai

Sankin-kōtai was the Edo Period system of alternate attendance instituted by the Tokugawa Shōgunate (1603-1868). The system required feudal lords (daimyō) to spend half of their time in Edo serving the shōgun, and half of their time in their own domains. The system had a profound effect on the landscape of Edo and its effects can still be felt in modern day Tōkyō.
