Another windy morning session spent at Fleet station on the South Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from South Western Railway.
The station at Fleet wasn't opened until 1847, almost 9 years after the line had been built, although the site at which this station sits wasn't the original site. There was another station known as Fleet Pond which conveniently enough was named after the nearby Fleet Pond which is still visible to this day, it was built on the adjacent side of Minley Road.
It was only when the railway was upgraded to four tracks that the station was rebuilt and moved to its current location. Although it seems strange that the station was actually proposed to be closed because it just wasn't generating enough interest. You had the trains running on the line but the passenger numbers using the station couldn't justify it. The station was eventually named Fleet in 1869.
But by 1906 the station was expanded as it's usage grew mostly because the town of Fleet was starting to expand which was bringing more people in.
The station is currently in the process of having ticket barriers installed.
My next station is Farnborough.
