Oceans Without Borders (OWB) sites in East Africa host a variety of coral reef types and a great diversity of species. One such site is the Mnemba Island site in Northern Unguja, Zanzibar. However, both local and coral reefs worldwide, are increasingly impacted by factors including unregulated tourism, overfishing, pollution and climate change. Through the Mnemba Coral Reef Restoration Project, we are working to restore the ecological integrity of the local Mnemba Island reefs, by establishing a coral nursery where we can transplant flourishing coral colonies to degraded reefs, and to inform the management and protection of this marine conservation area. This amazing work is conducted by the local OWB Marine Community and Conservation Rangers.
Oceans Without Borders is a unique collaboration between &Beyond – a luxury travel company with its roots in conservation and experiential guest experiences, and Wild Impact (previously Africa Foundation) – a non-profit organisation dedicated to community-led development and conservation of Africa’s natural environments.
