As CPKC train 135 was switching the west of their yard in London, I headed over to this crossing to wait for them to depart to continue their westward journey to Windsor. The train took another 20 minutes to finish switching and refill the air brake system along their train. Not long after, the crossing activated, and CPKC 135 came crawling through with a CP AC4400CW in the lead and a KCS SD70ACe trailing.
This crossing is a pretty nice one, and I’m glad I was able to get it recorded that day. There are a pair of classic RACO cantilevers installed in the 1960s. The RACO cantilevers originally sported GRS XC 8” incandescent lights, and the original bell would’ve likely been a RACO mechanical bell. The original gate masts featured GRS/WRRS Type D gate mechanisms. Sometime in the 1980s, a few of the original GRS XC 8” lights were replaced with WCH 8” lights. Sometime in the 1990s, the original RACO mechanical bell was replaced with a WCH mechanical bell. In the mid-late 1990s or early 2000s, the original gate masts featuring GRS/WRRS Type D gate mechanisms were replaced with the current Safetran gate masts. In 2012, the WCH mechanical bell was replaced with a GS Type 2 E-Bell. Between 2012 and 2014, all the 8” incandescent lights were replaced with the current WCH 12x20” Harmon Fading LED lights. Finally, around 2022, the GS Type 2 E-Bell was replaced with the current WCH E-Bell.
