Trek to Tumjang | Mt. Sielkal Peak | My First Trekking Experience

A Memorable Trek to Tumjang Village – August 23, 2025

On the breezy morning of August 23, 2025, I began my journey from Guwahati Railway Station aboard the Guwahati-Badarpur bound Vistadome train. Boarding at 6:45 AM, I was immediately mesmerized by the scenic hilly tracks, winding mountains, occasional tunnels, and expansive landscapes. The panoramic glass windows and 360-degree rotatable seats offered spectacular views throughout the ride, making it an unforgettable experience. Though my ticket was booked to New Haflong Station, fate had other plans. The train halted at Mahur Station, the nearest point to my destination, giving me a chance to disembark. I took a shared auto to Mahur Bazar, and from there, a shared taxi to Peleikal —the starting point of my trek to Tumjang Village.

After a quick meal of roti and maggi at Peleikal, I began my trek. Along the way, I met two fellow trekkers from Dibrugarh and Golaghat, whose cheerful company made the journey lively. We discussed the breathtaking landscapes and the realities of living in such high-altitude regions. After about three hours of trekking, we arrived at the village and stayed at a warm, pre-booked homestay. I spent the evening sharing cultures and experiences with the local family, enjoying their hospitality.

The next morning, we trekked toward Sielkal Peak via a shortcut. Though parts of the path seemed risky, the view at the top—where clouds floated close enough to touch—was simply awe-inspiring. After soaking in the beauty, I returned to the homestay to spend more time with the family before beginning our descent.

On my way back, I boarded the Kanchanjunga Train from Mahur Station, since my original return ticket from New Haflong to Guwahati couldn’t be used. It was a serendipitous end to a wonderful trip. This journey was filled with adventure, stunning landscapes, and meaningful connections. Looking forward to the next one.
