UC San Diego's Japanese Studies Program welcomed Mr. Taikai Sato, a professional bilingual rickshaw driver in Arashiyama, Kyoto, to share his unique career experiences. Mr. Sato explains the history of Japanese rickshaws, the services he provides to travelers from all over the world, and his passion and philosophy for his profession in detail in this Zoom talk event.
Mr. Taikai Sato first worked as a rickshaw driver part-time in Asakusa, Tokyo while in college. He holds a B.A. in International Liberal Studies from Waseda University (2018) and a Tourism MBA from Kyoto University Graduate School of Management (2024). He also studied at the University of Queensland, Australia, as an exchange student and worked for four years as a front desk clerk at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Tokyo.
Jinrikisha (人力車) is a traditional Japanese cart with two wheels pulled by a human. While originally used for transportation, rickshaws are now a popular touristic experience in many historic areas of Japan.
