On March 4th, 1970, Britain woke up to an ordinary Wednesday morning and by lunchtime was buried under one of the worst surprise snowstorms the country had ever seen. The March 1970 blizzard caught the entire nation completely off guard after the Met Office catastrophically failed to predict it. For twelve hours, heavy snow pounded southern England, the East Midlands, and Wales, with some areas seeing nearly 48 centimeters of snow. The 1970 snowstorm left 688 miners trapped underground when power lines collapsed in Kent, brought British Rail to its knees with trains arriving eight hours late, and sparked fury in Parliament. Villages were cut off, roads disappeared, and Britain learned that spring offered no guarantee of safety.
