If you don't want to create your own rhythms from scratch, then copy a preset rhythm and use that as the basis for your own rhythm. You can then rename it, delete (or "clear") individual parts from the copied preset rhythm and record new parts.
If you try to record over a preset part the display will show "Fixed", and the only limited editing that can be done is via the MIXER. But here you can change a long list of parameters - part on/off, tone, volume, pan, reverb, chorus, and delay.
In this video I will show you the steps needed to copy a preset rhythm to a user rhythm area, how to rename the copied preset, and how to delete and record a new part. And then in the last section, editing a preset rhythm. The steps are displayed on the video, but I've also copied them below:
How to copy a preset rhythm to a user rhythm
1. Select preset pattern (e.g. 008: SyPop)
2. LP FUNCTION/EDIT
3. Press REG1
4. Press ENTER (selected preset is now displayed)
5. Press ENTER (“Sure?”)
6. YES/+ (“Wait”, “Complete”)
7. LP EXIT (“Exit?)
8. YES/+
9. (“Write?”) YES/+
Preset rhythm is now copied to the next available user rhythm. Let’s rename it.
1. LP RECORD/STOP
2. “Rhy Name”
3. ENTER
4. DATA WHEEL with L/R arrows to move position
5. ENTER (“Sure?”) YES/+
6. SP EXIT
Fixed parts have to be deleted in order to create new ones, as follows:
1. Select copied preset rhythm
2. LP FUNCTION/EDIT
3. Press PART (red LED ON) to select the part you want to delete (1-8)
4. Press PART (red LED OFF)
5. Press REG2 (“Element” will clear all parts). R arrow to change to “Part”
6. ENTER (“Sure?”) YES/+ (“Wait”)
7. EXIT (“Sure?”) YES/+
8. (“Write?”) YES/+
Now let’s record a new PART
1. SP RECORD/STOP (“Empty”)
2. LP RECORD/STOP (set Quantize, Precount, Metronome, etc)
3. Set desired TONE
4. Press START/STOP to record. Play in key of C
5. Press START/STOP to end recording
6. LP EXIT (“Exit?”) YES/+
7. “Write?” YES/+
Edit a copied preset rhythm - changing tone, volume, pan, etc

2. LP FUNCTION/EDIT
3. LP MIXER - U/D and L/R arrows to navigate
4. Change: Part (ON/OFF), Tone, Volume, Pan, Rev Send, Cho Send, Delay Send
