In this video I show the process from start to finish of building built-in bookcases set atop cabinetry with integrated LED lighting. This project begins with a pile of plywood and lumber and a bare wall in our office
An in depth video covering the LED lighting installation is here:
• Installing Hidden LED lights & Power Suppl...
I used generic adhesive-backed LEDs from Amazon purchased for around $50 and a 350 watt power supply installed in my basement ceiling
This project took approximately 1 year of evenings and weekends and around $3000-$3500, most of which was spent on high quality 18mm thick Baltic birch plywood. I swear I would have had this done faster but chasing the kids around is a full time job that I'm more than happy to do. Also one of them sleeps in the room right above (hence why you see me driving screws with a drill instead of an impact driver)
Early on you'll notice I run non metallic conduit (sometimes called Smurf tube) to waiting spots behind the bookcases. This method is a bit over the top for low voltage wiring but it gives me decades of easy serviceability for any change I may want to make. I highly recommend the installation of conduit in any project that will have zero accessibility later
For paint I used a primer coat of Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond, sanded to 220, then applied two coats of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Reseda Green 9040. My camera often shifts the color while filming and makes it looks hideous. I assure you, it's gorgeous in real life
The paint sprayer I used is a Graco airless sprayer, model 257025
They're not sponsoring me in any way but I have to say their sprayer was great
Something I learned the hard way: the primer coat that hits bare wood will absorb and be reluctant to run and drip. Subsequent paint coats will not be as forgiving and should be applied much lighter at first or they will drip
The piece of music at the start is Gymnopédie No. 1 composed by Erik Satie
This entire project was a gift for my wife, If not for her the house would just be a workshop, a hot-plate, and a toilet... and I'm not 100% sure about those last two
