This is how I created a sample pack of my grandson's toy drum/percussion set. As it was laying around unused for a little bit, I took the opportunity to sample it. While a little limited in application, I do have a large array of home-recorded percussion sample packs that I have built over time that often get a use on my recordings, and this is a fine addition to that collection. Creating your own sample packs gives you access to a library of sounds that no one else has.
In this first instalment, I cover the process of recording the instrument and creating the individual sound files that will be used in the final MIDI pack. I recorded the samples using an OPR U87 directly overhead, through a UA Neve 1073 Unison preamp, with a high pass filter at 80Hz. I subsequently added additional processing in Pro Tools (mainly limiting to bring up the overall volume) and created four round-robin files for each of the seven instruments, resulting in 52 sample files.
