One of the most memorable hikes of our lives!!!
Yup! last minute tour! lol We scheduled a tour of the Vinicunca (Winikunka) Rainbow Mountain with Rainbow Mountain Travels ( https://www.rainbowmountaintravels.com ). Thankfully they had last minute availability because the hotel wanted to charge us a fortune for this trip. We were up at 3 am to meet with our driver by the hotel entrance (which they got to the hotel a bit early than expected so we had to rush to get ready). The guides were very professional and made us feel super comfortable. Keep in mind, this was no luxury guided tour, but for us, it was just what we wanted. The weather was absolutely perfect (September) and we got there early enough to beat the crowds.
** A few things to keep in mind:
-As much as possible, try to acclimate to the altitude before hitting this tour straight on. We've done many hikes at different altitudes and this one, by far, it has been the most challenging. Not because of the terrain or the trail difficulty but because of the lack of oxygen as such altitudes. Remember you're heading up to over 16,000 feet. Most of the tour guides carry oxygen with them in case you may need some. They also offer you a Coca based hand type gel which scents (pretty strong) sticks to you hands and you are to smell your hands every so often, this is supposed to help with your oxygen intake. Similar concept of chewing on Coca leaves.
Bring water and snacks! There are a few spots along the way where you can buy (cash/Sol only) snacks and water, but the quantities are limited.
-It's much colder around the Rainbow Mountain area so dress in layers.
-Don't bring anything expensive with you that you don't intend to carry as there are no lockers and you will leave everything back in the van.
-Use the restroom prior to getting to the area as much as possible. There are very few porta-potties once you get there and you have to pay to use them (about 1 Sol).
-They have horse rides that will take you half-way up the trail, but you still have to hike part of it to get to the view point. The horse rides can be anywhere from 20-60 Soles, depending where you pick up yours. Most are at the very beginning but you can stop any of the ones coming back down and ask.
-They have a guy all the way on the top who can stamp your passport with the Vinicunca stamp! Sweet stamp to have!.
-This is a whole day tour (if leaving from Cusco area) so plan accordingly.
Tip your guides!! ;)
