One canvas, three sections. In this video I paint with paddle brushes and masking tape, playing with structure, flow, and intuitive decisions as the work unfolds.
I’ve been a bit obsessed with the idea of making a diptych or triptych, but I kept running into practical challenges. With large brushes like these, placing separate canvases next to each other doesn’t really work — the edges would interrupt the painted strokes.
That’s what led me to try it on a single canvas first: creating three smaller paintings within one surface. It gives a similar effect, while allowing the movement and flow to continue uninterrupted. Masking tape turned out to be the perfect tool for this approach.
I wasn’t sure about the final outcome at first — would it become one cohesive piece, or three separate paintings? I played with that tension and ended up finding a balance somewhere in between.
Along the way, I also share a few tips on working with masking tape, including a simple trick to get really clean, sharp edges without paint bleeding underneath.
I hope you enjoy the process.
